Controversial VAR decision explained as Arsenal take crucial step in Premier League title race

Callum Wilson had a goal controversially chalked off towards the end of Arsenal's clash against West Ham. The Hammers striker believed he had levelled proceedings in the dying embers of stoppage time at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but Pablo was adjudged to have fouled David Raya in the build-up.

Chris Kavanagh awarded West Ham the goal, but the Video Assistant Referee, Darren England, and his assistant, Akil Howson, quickly intervened. Following a lengthy review at Stockley Park, they sent the on-field referee to the take a second look at the incident on the pitchside monitor.

He eventually overturned the original call, claiming that Pablo had impeded Raya before the ball fell to Wilson on the edge of the box. Announcing the decision to supporters, Kavanagh said: "After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is a free-kick."

Speaking from the gantry on Sky Sports, Gary Neville claimed that the match officials made the right decision. The Manchester United legend said: "I think it's a foul.

"He's holding Raya. Have VAR got the courage to make the decision? This is massive for refereeing in this country... This is one of those moments where Arsenal might think their name is on the trophy."

Neville added: "VAR Darren England is the FA Cup referee, he won't face a more pressurised moment than that at Wembley."
