Arsenal claimed a 1-0 victory over local rivals West Ham United in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Hammers should have broken the deadlock in the 78th minute, when Mateus Fernandes was slipped through, but David Raya denied him from close range.
Moments later, Fernandes’ miss proved costly as Leandro Trossard scored the winner, slotting to the bottom corner.
The hosts thought they had salvaged a draw late on, when substitute Callum Wilson rifled a shot into the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
The Hammers, who sit 17th, have now missed the chance to climb out of the relegation zone. They could be four points behind safety if 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur beat Leeds United on Monday.
The result sees Leeds and Nottingham Forest secure their top-flight status. The Whites and Forest are seven points clear of West Ham, with two games left.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side travel to Newcastle United next Sunday, before hosting Leeds. They must secure maximum points in both games, and hope Tottenham slip up to avoid relegation.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are now five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, despite the Cityzens 3-0 home victory over Brentford on Saturday.
City will hope to keep applying the pressure on the Gunners, when they welcome the UEFA Conference League finalist Crystal Palace to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Victories over Burnley and Crystal Palace in their final two fixtures would see Arsenal win the league title for the first time since the 2003/2004 season.
