Late VAR heartbreak vs Arsenal all but confirms West Ham relegation

**It was late heartbreak for West Ham as VAR ruled out a stoppage-time equaliser that would have given them hope of Premier League survival.**

West Ham made two changes to the team that lost to Brentford. A switch to a back five saw Jean-Clair Todibo replace Pablo Felipe, and Wan-Bissaka replaced Walker-Peters at right-back, or right-wing-back in this case.

As for the Gunners, they named an unchanged team from the side that beat both Fulham and Atletico Madrid.

The game started as many expected, Arsenal dominated possession, and the Hammers looked promising on the counterattack, not threatening, but lively.

Arsenal had a couple of early chances, Calafiori went close, but was denied by some great Mavropanos defending. Trossard then went even closer from the resulting corner, forcing Hermansesn into a great save before he hit the rebound onto the crossbar.

The Hammers started to get into the game a bit more, but no real chances came from it. The fans were loving the pressing and some of the tough challenges that were being put on the Arsenal players. The London Stadium usually gets a lot of grief for its atmosphere, but today it was excellent.

The Hammers had a real big chance just before half-time. After a run down the right, AWB didn’t have much support, so he had no choice but to swing a cross into the box.

Taty Castellanos got down to the cross with a diving header, which was expertly saved by David Raya, a massive chance for West Ham to take the lead.

West Ham started the second half pretty well, much of the same as the end of the first half. Diouf played a great ball into Pablo Felipe, who couldn’t quite get the contact needed on it, so it went wide. Pablo replaced Taty, who had run his socks off for 66 minutes.

Arsenal didn’t really have many chances at the start of the second period. It was the Hammers who had the biggest chance of the match after 78 minutes.

Mateus Fernandes had the chance to save West Ham and save Premier League fans from an Arsenal title win. A one-two with Pablo left him one-on-one with David Raya, with half of the goal gaping. The Portugal International chose the wrong side and was denied by the Spanish shot stopper.

If West Ham fans weren’t already heartbroken, they definitely were five minutes later as Leandro Trossard put the visitors ahead. After some fine work by Odegaard, combined with some lazy defending for the Hammers.

The Norwegian picked out Trossard, whose deflected effort found the bottom corner of Mads Hermansen’s West Ham goal. Surely the title-winning goal for Arsenal, right?

Five minutes into added time, Callum Wilson was West Ham’s hero yet again. After an excellent corner in from Jarrod Bowen and a scramble in the box, the ball came out to the English striker, who smashed the ball just over the line.

After a loud roar and some real limbs all over the stadium, the VAR check was announced. Five minutes later, they finally decided to rule out the goal for a foul by Pablo on Raya. This caused absolute outrage at the former Olympic stadium, with tempers flaring on and off the pitch.

A point would have given Nuno’s side a fighting chance of survival, but now, unless Leeds get a result and ideally beat Spurs tomorrow, our relegation is all but confirmed.
