Arsenal keep a close eye on Castello Lukeba as Leipzig defender edges closer to summer exit

Arsenal are still very much in the mix for RB Leipzig centre-back Castello Lukeba. According to @Dtalkingarsenal on X, the club are keeping the lines of communication open with the 23-year-old’s representatives, even if things haven’t reached a formal stage just yet.

Both Mikel Arteta and the new recruitment head, Maurizio Micheli, are big fans of the French defender. With the 2026 summer window around the corner, both Lukeba and Leipzig seem ready to consider a move. Fabrizio Romano puts the chances of him moving on at about 80–90%, which is a massive boost for Arsenal’s hopes.

While his release clause is set at €80 million and his contract runs until 2029, Leipzig reportedly value him closer to €60 million and might be willing to compromise this summer. It won’t be easy, though; Real Madrid are also interested, so Arsenal will need to show they mean business.

Lukeba originally made a name for himself at Lyon before Leipzig snapped him up for €30 million back in 2023. His stats tell the story of a busy, intelligent defender: in 25 Bundesliga games this season, he’s been part of nine clean sheets, averaging 1.25 tackles, 1.34 interceptions, and over five clearances per match.

Do Arsenal actually need Lukeba, given their defensive strength right now?

Since Arsenal already boast one of the best backlines in Europe, bringing in someone like Lukeba needs to make tactical sense rather than just being a statement signing. With Ben White’s future up in the air due to outside interest, Lukeba could step in to fill that void perfectly. Being left-footed, he also offers a natural balance next to William Saliba.

That said, Lukeba isn’t without his flaws, as his aerial game can be shaky when he’s bullied by physical strikers, something the Premier League will expose quickly. His distribution is great in Germany, but he’ll face much tighter pressing in England.

Ultimately, signing a 23-year-old French international at this price, right before he hits his prime, looks more like smart long-term building than a panic buy. If Arsenal want to sustain a title charge through the 2026/27 season, they need this kind of high-level depth.
