Mark Cuban purchases ownership stake in franchise, but it’s not Mavericks

Businessman Mark Cuban was known for many years as the primary owner of the Dallas Mavericks NBA franchise. While Cuban still has a piece of the Mavericks, he is moving forward with purchasing an ownership stake in another professional basketball team. The businessman is investing in the Canadian team the Brampton Honey Badgers, per Hoops Hype.

It isn't clear how much of a stake Cuban has currently in the Honey Badgers. That team plays in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Cuban says that Canada loves basketball so much that he couldn't pass up this opportunity.

“I think there is a ton of upside,” Cuban said, per Front Office Sports and reported by Hoops Hype.

Cuban still has an ownership stake in the Mavericks. He also had a previous relationship with one of the Honey Badgers' top executives.

“Cuban’s deal to buy into the Honey Badgers doesn’t come out of nowhere. Al Whitley, CEO of the Honey Badgers, previously worked for the Mavericks, including in front office roles, for nearly 22 years,” Hoops Hype reported.

The businessman has had success in the NBA. Under his ownership, the Mavericks won an NBA championship in 2011. That is the only NBA title the Dallas franchise has ever won.

Cuban decided to sell off the majority ownership stake in the Mavericks in 2023. He still remains very closely aligned with pro basketball. Now, his reach will extend beyond the United States.

“Canada is producing more stars than any other country,” Cuban added.

There is certainly validity to that statement. When the NBA expanded to Canada more than 30 years ago in Vancouver and Toronto, interest in the game skyrocketed. Several current or former NBA players are from Canada.

“Between Jamal Murray, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dillon Brooks, RJ Barrett, Andrew Wiggins, and plenty more, Canada is second behind only the United States in producing NBA talent,” Sports Illustrated reported.

Time will tell how Cuban's Canadian team fares in the years ahead.
