Anthony Edwards outpaces Timberwolves’ history with wild playoff feat

If you told Anthony Edwards that Game 5 between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the San Antonio Spurs would start immediately after the final buzzer of Game 4, he would gladly lace up and take the floor.

Edwards' adrenaline was probably still pumping after he powered the Timberwolves over the Spurs, 114-109, in Game 4 at Target Center on Sunday, tying their second-round series, 2-2.

He finished with a game-high 36 points, pouring 16 of them in the fourth quarter to finish off the Spurs. He shot 13-of-22 from the field and had six rebounds and two assists.

According to ESPN, Edwards recorded his 18th 30-point game in the playoffs. All other players in team history have combined for 17.

Edwards spearheaded the Timberwolves' furious rally in the final period, hitting a three-pointer with five minutes left to give them the lead, 98-97.

He took control for the rest of the way, stymying the Spurs, who played the second half without Victor Wembanyama after getting ejected in the second quarter for elbowing Naz Reid.

Edwards acknowledged that the absence of Wembanyama opened up the paint, but he claimed that the Spurs became “harder” to defend. He also issued a blunt message to Dylan Harper during the game.

Before his explosion in Game 4, Edwards had been struggling in the best-of-seven affair as he had just returned from a knee injury. Coach Chris Finch brought him off the bench in the first two games.

Game 5 returns to Frost Bank Center on Tuesday.
