VAR’s biggest moment

Since VAR was first introduced into the Premier League there have been numerous controversial decisions involving the technology.

Opinion remains divided among players, commentators and fans as to its use and effectiveness, and for every decision it gets right, instances will be pointed out of wrong calls.

However, in the intervening period, there has arguably been no more seismic VAR intervention than in the Premier League match between West Ham and Arsenal at the weekend.

West Ham thought they had scored the equaliser that would have kept their hopes of Premier League survival, whilst Arsenal thought they had conceded and, in the process, handed the initiative in the title race back to Manchester City.

Four long minutes passed, whilst the VAR official, Darren England, forensically poured over the footage, examining every angle, before advising the referee Chris Kavangh to consult his monitor.

He also took his time before uttering the words that gave the Gunners great cheer, but came as a major blow both to West Ham and the watching Manchester City fans “after review….”.

The rights and wrongs of the decision can be argued all day long. There was a foul in the Arsenal goalkeeper, David Raya, but similar things have gone on at set-pieces in the Premier League all season, and they have not been penalised.

But what cannot be argued is the impact the decision had on the result. Arsenal won the match, and are now just two games away from their first league title in 22 years.

West Ham are now looking as if they are consigned to Championship football next season.
