Manchester United are desperate to sign two new central midfielders this summer and club officials will have been watching Arsenal’s 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday afternoon with a close eye.

Irrespective of the VAR controversy in stoppage time, which undoubtedly marred Arsenal’s victory, there was one player who stood out at the London Stadium and it wasn’t somebody on the brink of lifting the Premier League title.

Mateus Fernandes may have missed a guilt-edged chance before Leandro Trossard’s eventual winner, but he outshone Arsenal’s expensively-assembled midfield throughout the affair and passed his Man Utd transfer audition with flying colours.

The Portugal international has been in immense form since arriving at West Ham from Southampton for a fee of €44 million last August and there is zero chance he will be playing Championship football next season if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are relegated to the second tier.

Fernandes has been one of the best central midfielders in the entirety of the Premier League this term and it’s no surprise that Man Utd have earmarked him as a possible replacement for the departing Casemiro this summer.

The Red Devils are keeping close tabs on a number of midfielders ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, including the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, while Elliot Anderson is regarded as their primary target.

However, Nottingham Forest’s asking price of over €120m remains a major obstacle to overcome and Man Utd will be encouraged by Fernandes’ performance on Sunday, with the 21-year-old expected to cost far less than Anderson.

Mateus Fernandes passes Man Utd transfer audition with flying colours

Fernandes has impressed throughout this season, but playing against the champions elect and their stacked XI was a true test of whether he is ready to start for a club of Man Utd’s size. After 90 minutes of action at the London Stadium, the midfielder proved he is more than capable of partnering Kobbie Mainoo at Old Trafford.

Of course, his close-range miss was glaring, however Fernandes was instrumental in the build-up to the chance, while he was the best player on the pitch during the second-half.

In a midfield battle against Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Eberechi Eze, Fernandes came out on top, winning seven of his 11 ground duels, making four recoveries, completing seven carries and losing possession just nine times.

He personified West Ham’s energetic performance and, in a similar vein to Anderson in the vast majority of Forest’s matches, he was the heartbeat of all their good work in the Arsenal half.

Man Utd need to get it right with their Casemiro replacement, given the importance of the Brazilian, and Fernandes is showing all the signs necessary to suggest he is the perfect man for the job.
