NBA analyst makes Joel Embiid future clear after 76ers exit

Joel Embiid is expected to remain with the Philadelphia 76ers despite growing questions after the team's playoff exit. ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst pointed to Embiid's massive contract and Philadelphia's salary situation as the main reasons why the former MVP is "not going anywhere" heading into next season.

The future of Joel Embiid became a major talking point after the Philadelphia 76ers were eliminated from the playoffs, but one NBA analyst believes there is little mystery about what happens next.

Philadelphia's season came to an end after a second-round sweep against the New York Knicks despite opening the postseason with an upset series win over the Boston Celtics.

After the loss, questions started growing around Embiid's future with the franchise following another disappointing playoff finish and concerns about the roster around him.

ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst addressed the situation on ESPN's Get Up and explained why he expects Embiid to remain in Philadelphia.

"Well, let me say that I do think this was a success because they beat the Celtics in that first-round series with the comeback," Windhorst said. "Embiid was awesome."

Windhorst admitted that some of Embiid's comments after the season could create concern, especially considering the physical toll of another long playoff run.

"It's a little bit worrying to hear him say we came into the season thought he was about done," he explained. "Considering he has three years and $192 million left on his contract, which is a new extension which will begin next season."

Still, Windhorst made it clear he does not see Embiid leaving the 76ers.

"And that is why I can promise him he will definitely be back. He is not going anywhere."

According to Windhorst, Philadelphia's current salary structure makes major roster changes difficult, with both Embiid and Paul George tied to huge long-term contracts.

"The Sixers do have a couple of free agents, Kelly Oubre, Quentin Grimes that they have to deal with. But with him and Paul George locked into enormous salaries, this is going to be a team that's going to mostly have these guys next season," he concluded.

Embiid once again played through several injuries during the postseason, including a hip problem, a sprained ankle, and an appendectomy. Despite that, the former MVP averaged 24 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.4 assists during the 2026 playoffs.
