Arsenal winning Premier League and Champions League would put them above Invincibles

The current Arsenal team would rank above the legendary Invincibles if they complete an historic Premier League and Champions League double.

That's the view of Gunners great Martin Keown, who was part of Arsene Wenger's side that stormed to Premier League glory in 2004 after going an entire season unbeaten.

Fast forward 22 years, and Arsenal now stand on the brink of the their first league glory since the Invincibles' year.

Mikel Arteta's team took a huge step towards the title on Sunday with a dramatic 1-0 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium.

Just as the league leaders looked set to drop points, Leandro Trossardbroke the deadlock in the 83rd minute, before surviving a huge late scare as VAR denied the Hammers an injury-time equaliser.

The win saw Arsenal move five points clear at the top of the table with two matches remaining, leaving the title in their hands.

Victory in east London rounded off a memorable week for Arteta's men, who booked their spot in a first Champions League final since 2006 by beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Emirates last Wednesday.

Paris Saint-Germain await them in the final, where a win would see the Gunners crowned European champions for the first time in their 139-year history.

Am I Wright?

With unprecedented success in Arsenal's sights, this led club legend Ian Wright to claim that Arteta’sside will go down as the ‘best team’ in the club’s history if they deliver a Premier League and Champions League double, surpassing the Invincibles.

He said: "I would put them above the Invincibles simply because this team has got the capability of being invincible in the Champions League and to win the Premier League as well."

To this day, Arsenal's 2003/04 title-winning side are the only team in Premier League history to go the entire season unbeaten.

But they could be eclipsed by their current counterparts if they achieve domestic and European glory, with the Invincibles suffering a quarter-final exit in the Champions League.

With a strong case for either side being the Gunners' greatest, the question was put to Invincible Keown on Monday's talkSPORT.

Keown: Invincibles debate is valid

Discussing the credentials of Arsenal's current crop compared to his legendary side, Keown said: “Is this a better team?

"Look, let's have this conversation at the end of the season.

“Hopefully if Arsenal have got two pots sitting on the counter, it'd be a nice conversation to have, but they're nowhere near it yet. They're just on that race, they haven't reached that mountain.”

Pressed on whether an historic double would make Arteta's men 'better' than the Invincibles, he replied: “We'll discuss it.

"I think they probably would be because they would have achieved more than we did.

Keown admitted he would be happy to hand over the 'best ever' tag to Arsenal's current side

Keown admitted he would be happy to hand over the 'best ever' tag to Arsenal's current side

“I mean, let's be fair, the Invincibles tag was a consolation for a team that probably should have won the treble that season.

"We went out of the Champions League and FA Cup in the space of four days and perhaps the FA Cup got in the way."

Despite having the chance to win more silverware than the Invincibles, Keown argued that this has been helped by Arsenal's quarter-final FA Cup exit to Southampton

The club legend added: “I think actually when Arsenal went out of the FA Cup this year to Southampton, as much as it hurt, it's actually made it a little bit easier for Arsenal.

“Now, they don't play until next Monday because they're not in the FA Cup.

"And maybe by going for everything, it was stopping Arsenal from winning anything.”

While Keown's co-host Simon Jordan was reluctant to accept the current Arsenal side as the club's greatest ever, he agreed that the potential achievements alone would give them a serious claim to this.

Keown then reminded the talkSPORT presenter that the Gunners would have to overcome the very best to land an historic double.

He finished off: "You think about who Arsenal have to beat to get there. Man City have been incredible, haven't they? What have they won? Five of the last six Premier Leagues.

“So what you're overcoming to get there, and then PSG in the [Champions League] final.

"So to do this and be the best of it. You deserve that tag.”
