Kendrick Perkins sends strong message about Joel Embiid’s future with 76ers

ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins believes that the Philadelphia 76ers should trade superstar center Joel Embiid.

In Perkins' recent appearance on First Take, Perkins said that Embiid needs a change of scenery.

"As far as Joel Embiid, this relationship has run its course," Perkins said. "It's time for both parties to separate. I think it would be in the best interest of the organization, and it would also be in the best interest for Joel Embiid. I believe Joel Embiid needs a change of scenery. I believe Joel Embiid needs a breath of fresh air."

The 76ers were recently swept by the New York Knicks in the second round of the playoffs. As for Embiid, he just completed his 10th season in the City of Brotherly Love.

Joel Embiid’s future in Philadelphia uncertain

Embiid's injury history speaks for itself. This season alone, Embiid was held to 38 games; however, he was spectacular when he was on the court, averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds.

While Embiid has been great on the floor, it hasn't been enough to take the 76ers over the top. In addition, he will be owed a ton of money next season. According to Spotrac, the 32-year-old is owed $57.9 million as he heads into the first year of his three-year, $192.9 million extension that he signed in September 2024.

The 76ers have failed to make the Eastern Conference Finals in Embiid's time in Philadelphia. While they have had the pieces to make a deep playoff run, the ball has yet to bounce their way.

After getting swept, Embiid spoke on the uncertainty of the team moving forward.

“I don’t know who’s going to be here," Embiid said. "I don’t even know if I’m going to be here, but whatever happens, happens. But for me, I’m excited about really getting back to myself.”

There is a good chance the 76ers front office decides to move off the 2023 MVP this offseason.
