Premier League handed £577m UEFA boost - the eye-watering sums Newcastle United, Arsenal, Aston …

Football finance data experts have projected the prize money earned by Premier League clubs in UEFA competitions so far this season.

Figures released by football finance data experts, Football Meets Data, show the nine Premier League sides competing in European competitions this season have earned around £577million in combined prize money from UEFA this season.

Six Premier League clubs competed in the Champions League for the first time ever this season, with all six reaching the knockout stages. Arsenal have progressed all the way to the final, where they will face holders Paris Saint-Germain.

English football dominates Europe in 2025/26

English clubs have also performed well in the Europa League with Aston Villa reaching the final, where they will face Freiburg, having knocked out Nottingham Forest in the semi-final.

Crystal Palace are also set to face Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final this month, meaning a hat-trick of European trophy wins is still possible for Premier League clubs.

The performance of English clubs in Europe this season has seen the Premier League granted a European Performance Spot, meaning fifth place will qualify for the Champions League next season. There is a slight caveat to that if Aston Villa finish fifth and qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.

In that instance, sixth place would be granted the European Performance Spot and qualify directly for the Champions League alongside the Premier League’s top four and Villa as Europa League winners.

But the prize money data released shows a significant disparity in competition prize money.

Newcastle United receive £55.7million of £577m cut

Newcastle progressed to the last-16 of the Champions League but were the only Premier League side to finish outside of the top eight and had to take part in a play-off tie against Qarabag.

The Magpies won that tie comfortably 9-3 on aggregate, before being thrashed 8-3 on aggregate in the last-16 against Barcelona despite taking the lead in the tie and remaining level until just before half-time in the second leg at Camp Nou.

That run saw them awarded £55.7million in prize money, just enough to cover the signing of Yoane Wissa.

Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City also reached the last-16 of the Champions League but received £73million, £79.7million and £83.9million in prize money, respectively.

Liverpool reached the quarter-final and received £94.7million while Arsenal have so far received £123.9million for reaching the final, which could increase further.

While Newcastle have received the least amount of prize money of any Premier League club in the Champions League, they have still received significantly more than those in the lesser competitions.

Villa’s prize money so far for reaching the Europa League final stands at just over £30million while Forest’s is £20.85million and Crystal Palace’s in the Conference League currently stands at just over £15million.

Given the added costs and UEFA financial restrictions imposed on teams for competing in European competitions, qualifying for the secondary and tertiary competitions can sometimes do more harm than good to clubs.

Newcastle are set to miss out on European football this season. The Magpies have interestingly only qualified for the Champions League under Eddie Howe, having done so twice while missing out on the lesser competitions.
