The new Raheem Sterling: £45m star may never play for Arsenal again after West Ham - opinion

And breathe, Sunday's win over West Ham was all a bit stressful for Arsenal, wasn't it? The Gunners may well be in pole position to win the title and in a first Champions League final in 20 years, but it has not been plain sailing.

Their trip to the London Stadium on Sunday was never going to be. Despite the Hammers' plight, they have made their stadium something of a fortress under the reign of Nuno Santo.

Yet, after one of the biggest VAR calls in Premier League history, Mikel Arteta's men marched on, not just thanks to that decision but also thanks to Leandro Trossard's first goal in 2026.

For Arsenal, they have seen a big improvement from Trossard in recent games, but their forward line as a whole has vastly improved.

How Arteta has engineered Arsenal's turnaround

As the north Londoners crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Southampton and lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City, huge questions were asked of this Arsenal team.

The questions got louder when they lost to City in the league and also suffered defeat to Bournemouth. In previous seasons, Arsenal may well have fallen by the wayside. However, Arteta has got his men back on side and rallied them brilliantly.

Since that defeat against Bournemouth, they have not lost a game and have not conceded in three straight Premier League games. The turnaround seems to have been born out of a personnel and tactical switch.

In the last three games, Arsenal have been unchanged with Myles Lewis-Skelly operating in midfield ahead of Martin Zubimendi and Riccardo Calafiori playing at left-back.

On paper, you would not usually associate those changes with having an impact on proceedings in the final third. Yet, the fact of the matter is that it's had a hugely positive impact. Lewis-Skelly and Calafiori are both incredibly positive and progressive, playing the ball forward and running with it on a regular basis.

Arsenal have improved in transition as a result. The ball has arrived at the feet of Bukayo Saka, Viktor Gyokeres and Trossard far more quickly. All three players have been heavily involved in the goals in the last week as a result.

Saka scored and assisted against Fulham just over a week ago before he was the hero against Atletico. That said, Trossard and Gyokeres have more than played their part.

The former netted the all-important winner against West Ham on Sunday, while the big Swede was an absolute menace to the Atletico backline a week ago. He did not score but his all-round game was the best we have seen it in Arsenal colours.

Arsenal's attacking revival is bad news for their new Sterling

This has been a big week not just in Arsenal's season but for Gyokeres' entire career.

At various points this term, he has been made out to be the scapegoat. He looked like the problem in this team. At stages, he has been. He did not look ready to lead the line for a team battling on multiple fronts.

However, he has vastly improved in recent weeks and months, scoring 12 goals in his last 19 matches for club and country. He's one of the most in-form strikers in Europe.

Two of his best performances in Arsenal colours have arguably come over the last ten days. He scored twice and assisted Saka in the 3-0 win over Fulham and then delivered a monstrous performance that helped Arteta's side reach a European final.

Gyokeres ran the channels tirelessly and held the ball up brilliantly against Diego Simeone's men. His form, however, is not good news for Kai Havertz and, in particular, Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian has had a strange season since returning from an ACL injury towards the back end of the year. He scored two vital goals against Inter Milan inside the San Siro, but beyond that has offered very little. It's been a real Raheem Sterling-esque campaign for the former Manchester City striker.

Like Sterling last season, the 29-year-old has been something of a spare part. As with Sterling, he's a player with a fine collection of trophies; he's had a wonderful career in English football, but his powers are waning, as are his minutes. The winger started just seven league matches last term. Jesus has been even worse in that regard, starting just two.

In fact, the centre forward has not started a game since the FA Cup defeat to Southampton in early March and has not found the net since 15th February when he scored against Wigan.

It was incredibly damning that when Arsenal travelled to the east end of London on Sunday, Jesus was not even in the squad. An injury has not been reported but the Brazilian was absent from the entire matchday squad.

Instead, young Max Dowman was preferred. It was probably the best bench Arsenal have had all season. Dowman was joined by Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke, Piero Hincapie and Gabriel Martinelli. Their depth has been praised and rightly so; it's incredible.

For the £45m signing, he is now surely running out of time to prove to Arteta and his coaching staff that he deserves to be at the Emirates next season. He is likely to be one of the first players to leave when the summer arrives. It would be a surprise if we saw him play for Arsenal again with just three games remaining.
