CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!
Since I've been at this daily writing thing for a bunch of years now (five?, six?, I've lost track), I've given consideration to taking a day off each week or going on hiatus when things get really slow (early July, especially). But, whenever I do, I think that writing every day and being more-or-less reliable for something to read each morning is a good thing. Plus, when things slow down is when I get desperate, which creates unintended humorr as I ineptly try to turn, for example, an appearance from a player at a minor league hockey game into a story. Which is what this thing is sort of all about.
Perhaps I should create a "Better Stuff"-like tagline for the Daily Newswire. Something like "OBR Daily Newswire: The Desperation Makes it Amusing".
Fortunately, today's news is somewhat more active than the early dry July timeframe, as here are some actual minor news tidbits to mull over and bloviate about.
A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE CHIEF: David Njoku's Cleveland chapter is officially closed. The longtime Browns tight end has signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the LA Chargers. This was expected after he wasn't re-signed this offseason, and frankly, it's a great landing spot for him — Jim Harbaugh runs a tight end-heavy offense in LA, and he finally has quarterback stability. We'll always remember the big plays, David. Good luck out there (except when you play us). Here's the Watercooler thread on the news, as a former Browns first-round pick moves on.
COULD THE BROWNS SURPRISE? Across the NFL media landscape, the 2026 expectations for the Cleveland Browns are pretty much what they usually are: that the team is perhaps not the worst in the NFL, but it's right up there. I looked at a CBS mock draft this morning, and the team was pegged to pick fourth, consistent with a disappointing finish somewhere in the 4-13 or 5-12 range. As long as the Browns lack stability at the quarterback position, this is probably fair. The mock draft, for what it's worth, had the Browns taking LaNorris Sellers with the fourth pick, which would make me exceedingly nervous, but let's see how Norris' 2026 college season goes.
The national consensus might disappoint Browns fans, particularly as it comes after another strong draft by the team, but the expectation appears to be that subpar quarterback play will hold the team back again this year.
One thing going in their favor, however, and that's a very favorable strength of schedule, which I might be tempted to say puts the Browns in a better position to succeed in 2026. Unfortunately, of course, things can change for individual teams so quickly in a year that it's hard to project that teams will be as bad as they were last year. Plus, the strength of schedule is heavily influenced by what was a really down year for AFC North teams and probably isn't likely to repeat.
So, a better-than-expect result is a probability, but I wouldn't wager on it.

KC CONCEPCION GETS AROUND TOWN: The Browns' first-round wide receiver pick is making himself known on the Cleveland scene already. He hustled back and forth between Progressive Field and the Cavs arena to throw out the first pitch during last night's Guardians game and pull the sword before the Cavs took on the Pistons. Concepcion looked terrific during the rookie mini-camp, and Pete and Lane offered that they expect a solid first-year from the rookie during last night's Gang of Three.
While the team's rookie quarterback, Taylen Green, gives himself a lofty comparison to Randall Cunningham, the comp for Concepcion coming from head coach Todd Monken is somewhat less stellar, but still good: Zay Flowers. If that's Monken's comp for Concepcion, then it's clear the Browns new sideline leader has high hopes for the impact Concepcion will make in Cleveland right off the bat.
CRUMBS LEFT OVER:
– Justin Jefferson is the team's draft pick, who is drawing closest to getting a shrug from Browns fans, since his college production wasn't off-the-charts good. But the Browns view him as a late riser, and the youngster has some interesting quotes regarding last year's DROY, Carson Schwesinger, and veteran Quincy Williams, in that he's eager to compete with them. Fightin' words: ""I love to compete. I just can't wait to show them I'm better than them." Well, then. Good luck with that.
– Finally, former Browns WR Michael Woods has landed with the Denver Broncos after impressing at their rookie minicamp tryout. Woods was originally a promising draft pick who battled with injury during his time with the Browns. Good to see him get another chance to show what he can do.
– The Steelers are reportedly zeroing in on QB Will Howard as the Aaron Rodgers saga drags on. I'm liking this situation in Pittsburgh, as Rodgers takes his usual time to decide whether to play another year, and the Steelers have to start installing their offense regardless. I loved Howard at Ohio State, and he'll always have a special place as a QB who helped lead the Buckeyes to a national championship, but, man, the wide receivers he had to throw to at OSU would make any quarterback look brilliant. That offense was loaded. He's got a different type of challenge in Yinzerland.
Have a good one! GO BROWNS!
