Florida center Rueben Chinyelu has an enviable opportunity in front of him: he's one of 78 players participating in the NBA Draft Combine at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. That wasn't the case last year after Chinyelu tested the NBA Draft waters but ultimately wasn't invited to the main Combine, instead participating in the G League Elite Camp (now known as the G League NBA Draft Combine) three days prior to the primary event.
Chinyelu will have an opportunity to compete and test in front of scouts from all 30 NBA teams as he looks to increase his stock and potentially be selected in June in the 2026 NBA Draft. Though, Chinyelu announced he would preserve his collegiate eligibility, and a return to Florida for his senior season remains a possibility if not a likelihood in the days or weeks ahead. Chinyelu has until May 27th at 11:59 p.m. ET to make his decision, and the information he'll gain in the week ahead will determine his future.
If he does opt to return to Florida, the Gators will once again have the nation's most talented frontcourt, with fellow starters Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon joining Chinyelu in returning to UF. In addition, the Gators have added size from overseas, signing freshman Arturas Butajevas and 22-year-old forward Domen Petrovic to join a Florida team projected to be one of the nation's best – if not the preseason No. 1-ranked team – for the 2026-27 season. Furthermore, the Gators signed 7-foot center Jones Lay as the team's lone addition from the high school level, even if it's unclear whether or not Lay will be able to carve out a role for UF during his freshman season in Gainesville.
If Chinyelu doesn't return, however, the Gators may pivot to another option, even with the roster seemingly complete following the aforementioned additions, according to head coach Todd Golden.
"We're always going to stay ready. Again, like, we hope Rueben's back, you know, he's going to test and check out what's out there for him. But I'd be lying if I didn't think Tommy coming back and Condo coming back appealed to him, you know, to come back as well. Like, they're all boys, and they all want to be together, so there's different variables out there. But yes, like, we'll be prepared to pivot if Rueben stays in the Draft," Golden said in April. "And the great thing is, I think we have a really good group as it is, like, we'll probably need to add a little more size, and you can't – there's nobody that's going to replace Rueben. You know, Rueben's a pretty unique, amazing player. So it might have to be, you know, just kind of a, whatever, just a different type of replacement. But again, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping we get the big fella back."
With the NBA Draft Combine getting underway in Chicago, Chinyelu may not be the primary competitor under observation – that honor goes to the contingent of AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer and Darryn Peterson, along with the projected lottery picks – but how he fares is intriguing nonetheless as it concerns his decision.
CBS Sports previewed the biggest names who will have a stay-or-go decision to make at the NBA Draft Combine, and the outlet divided the players in the category into groups of either "Likely staying in the Draft, but never say never," "Heading back to school?" and "True toss-ups, all eyes on these prospects this week."
Chinyelu was the first player mentioned in the second category, alongside Vanderbilt's Tyler Tanner, Kentucky's Malachi Moreno, Illinois's Andrej Stojakovic, Arkansas's Billy Richmond III, Michigan State's Jeremy Fears Jr., Louisville's Flory Bidunga and USC's Jacob Cofie.
Chinyelu has an interesting decision to make. The big man market near the middle/end of the first round has dried up a little bit after several players (Krivas and Ngongba) at the position returned to school. Could Chinyelu be next? If he does, it would solidify Florida as the best frontcourt in the nation. The Gators already have Haugh and Alex Condon running it back. Getting back one of the best defenders in the country could give Florida the edge to be the preseason No. 1 this fall.
We'll know soon whether or not Chinyelu opts to keep his name in the NBA Draft or run it back once again in Gainesville. If he does, the Gators will likely be the nation's preseason No. 1 team due to the talented frontcourt, the return of multiple key pieces such as Boogie Fland and Urban Klavzar, and the reunion at UF with Denzel Aberdeen if he does indeed secure a waiver for a fifth season of eligibility. A year ago, Fland participated in the NBA Draft Combine before pulling out early and quickly joining the Gators.
Could Chinyelu follow a similar path if he gathers enough information to make a decision before the week comes to a close? We'll see, which makes the NBA Draft Combine an interesting follow for the Florida faithful in the days ahead.
