Stephen Curry draws $1.7 million in sneaker auction sales for charity

Golden State Warriors' legend Stephen Curry made headlines all throughout the NBA season with his widely-covered “sneaker free agency” period following his departure from Under Armour. Partnering with the world's leading auction house Sotheby's, 81 sneakers were auctioned off as Curry managed to raise $1.7 million dollars to benefit his Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation.

In scouting for a new suitor, Curry was intentional in wearing different sneakers from competing brands during tunnel walks and on the court. Digging into a deep bag, his choices ranged from a number of Nike Kobe sneakers, the Reebok Shaqnosis, Anthony Edwards' Adidas AE 1's, and even Roger Federer's signature ON performance sneaker. All warm-up and game-worn sneakers also came with Curry's signature and personal inscriptions on the shoe.

Curry told Sotheby's, “I'm excited to share this unique catalog in a way that lets fans be part of the journey. Partnering with Sotheby's to bring this auction to life gives these sneakers a platform beyond the game, where they can live on and mean something to someone else.”

With all of the available 81 lots selling out, the top driver was Curry's 2010 Nike Hyperdunk PE from Christmas Day, the only sneaker previously worn in an NBA game and worn again during his sneaker free agency. The pair sold for $121,600, almost 50,000 more than the next leading pair, the Nike Kobe 6 Protro “Mambacita Sweet 16” selling at $76, 800.

“What makes this even more special is the impact it can have off the court. Every dollar raised will support Eat. Learn. Play. – the foundation that I co-founded with Ayesha – where we focus on the everyday needs that shape a child's future with access to food, literacy, and safe places to play and grow.”

Curry has yet to make a decision where he'll sign his next signature deal and with the amount of nods he gave during his free agency period, your guess is as good as ours. Stay tuned for more on the Stephen Curry sponsorship sweepstakes.
