SAN FRANCISCO – Steve Kerr is officially back as the Warriors head coach.
The man who has led Golden State to four NBA titles put pen to paper on Tuesday morning, inking a multiyear deal with the only franchise he has ever coached.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue coaching this team,” Kerr said in a press release. “This organization has meant so much to me for the last 12 years – from ownership to our players, our staff and our fans – and it’s an incredible privilege to be a part of something so special. I’m excited to keep competing with this group.”
Though the details of the contract were not made public, Kerr is expected to remain the highest-paid coach in the NBA over the length of a two-year contract.
Sources confirmed to the Bay Area News Group that Kerr and the front office agreed to the contract on Saturday.
Now, the Warriors will have Kerr in-tow for a 13th season as they approach the NBA draft, where they own the 11th pick in the draft, and free agency.
“We’re thrilled that Steve’s tenure with the Warriors will continue,” general manager Mike Dunleavy said in the release. “His impact on our franchise has been enormous, well beyond the championships and incredible on-court success. The character and leadership that he exudes each day helps set the tone for what we hope our franchise represents both now and in the future.”
Kerr is the winningest coach in Warriors history with a 604-353, and owns a 104-48 record in the postseason.
The Warriors finished last season 37-45 while dealing with a brutal set of injuries to key players. Kerr, 60, will need to navigate an upcoming season that will see the Warriors be without starting wings Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler until at least January after both suffered devastating knee injuries.
