Former Arsenal striker Paul Dickov believes midfielder Declan Rice would be a frontrunner to win the Ballon d’Or if the Gunners lift the Champions League title.
Rice has had another top-notch season with the Gunners. The 27-year-old has been a regular starter in the heart of the midfield, standing out with offensive and defensive contributions.
He is one of the leading candidates for the Ballon d’Or, and Dickov believes he could propel to the top if Arsenal go on to beat Paris Saint-Germain and win the Champions League this month.
In an interview with MrQ, Dickov said: “Whether Arsenal go on and successfully win the Premier League or not, I think that winning the Champions League is the big one for the Ballon d’Or.
“So if Arsenal go on and win the Champions League, then Declan Rice has got to be in with a great shout for the Ballon d’Or.”
Rice has made 16 goal contributions in the ongoing season, three fewer than he managed last term.
Despite this, his influence on the team has been notably bigger. The Englishman has completed 14 more passes per outing in the Premier League, compared to the previous campaign.
He has also won more duels, tackles and made more recoveries than last season. Rice has undoubtedly excelled playing in a central midfield role with extra freedom to press forward.
If Arsenal were to lift the Champions League against favourites PSG, Rice could emerge as a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or, though the World Cup could be more influential.
Luka Modric previously won the prestigious accolade in 2018 after winning the Champions League at Real Madrid and leading Croatia to the World Cup final. Rice may have to replicate such a feat.
Hence, we don’t believe Champions League glory alone would secure Rice the Ballon d’Or. His performances for England at the World Cup could also determine his chances of winning.
