Following the tragic news that Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has passed away, TMZ Sports reports that his death is being investigated as drug-related. According to NBC4 Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency call shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.
Authorities said paramedics pronounced Clarke dead at the scene, while investigators later discovered drug paraphernalia inside the residence and are examining the possibility of an overdose. In April, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas for having possession of a controlled substance as well as speeding.
On Monday, the Memphis Grizzlies announced that Clarke had passed away in a statement posted to social media.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke. Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also issued a statement about the passing of Clarke.
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke. As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization,”
Brandon Clarke was drafted in 2019 with the 21st overall pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was subsequently traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, in which he spent the rest of his career. He was named to the All-Rookie First Team in 2020 and averaged 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 60% from the field.
