Stars and Stripes Honor Flight teams up with Wisconsin sports teams for Flight of Champions

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is teaming up again with the Packers, Brewers and Bucks for this year’s Flight of Champions on Saturday, June 20.

About 160 Vietnam-era veterans from the Green Bay and Milwaukee areas will fly to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in their honor.

One plane leaves Green Bay’s Austin Straubel Airport. Two more depart Milwaukee.

At a news conference, three Navy veterans who’ve been on the trip said it was life-changing, giving them long-overdue closure.

“I went last fall when this opportunity came up, and it was wonderful. It still chokes me up. It’s a long day, but I was very fortunate. I had one of the former Packer players, Chris Francis, was my guardian. And it made the day for me,” said Andrew Bronander, a Vietnam War veteran who served in the U.S. Navy.

Organizers are urging the public to pack the Green Bay terminal for a welcome home around 7 p.m., saying many of these veterans never got that thanks decades ago.

Eligible veterans are also encouraged to sign up with their local Honor Flight hubs.
