Jason Collins, the NBA's first openly gay player, has died, aged 47, after an eight-month battle with an aggressive brain tumour.

"Jason changed people's lives in unexpected ways and was a source of inspiration to all who knew him and to those who admired him from afar," Collins' family said in a statement released by the NBA.

Collins played in the league for 13 years for six different teams.
