A local economist explains how compounded inflation, stagnant wages, and the city's high poverty rate are reshaping what "affordable" really means here, and urges residents to save or seek support programs where possible.
2. Man fatally shot days after moving into west Bexar County apartment; No suspects in custody, BCSO says (ksat.com) β A 24-year-old man who had just moved to San Antonio was fatally shot at the Sienna at Westover Hills apartments on Potranco Road, and deputies still have no suspects. Bexar County Sheriff's Office says Garza was found with a gunshot wound after a 911 call and died at the scene. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact them as his family seeks justice.
3. Deadly Migrant Freight Train Investigation Expands to Del Rio Rail Yards (foxsanantonio.com) β A multi-county investigation into a suspected migrant-smuggling freight train now includes San Antonio, where a man linked to the case was found dead near the tracks. Authorities say the train passed through Del Rio, San Antonio, and Laredo, where six people were later discovered dead in a boxcar, and are probing whether additional railcars continued toward Houston.
4. Should there be honking celebrations after every Spurs playoff win? San Antonio fans weigh in (ksat.com) β Playoff basketball's return has San Antonio buzzing β and honking β as fans debate whether car-horn celebrations should follow every Spurs win or only big series victories. Local superfan voices and poll results show most residents favor saving the loudest honks for clinching a series, even as many enjoy the renewed citywide playoff energy. However you feel, the Alamo City's streets are sounding spirited again.
5. Before Hollywood: Some of the first movie Westerns were filmed 80 miles from Austin (kvue.com) β Over a century ago, some of the earliest Western movies were filmed in San Antonio and the surrounding Hill Country, long before Hollywood dominated the genre. A French producer's Star Film Ranch, located south of the city along the Mission Trail, cranked out short films that showcased local landscapes and helped launch early movie stars. Historians are still searching for more of these lost Texas-made films.
