The Philadelphia 76ers' Daryl Morey era officially came to an end this week as the 76ers fired their president of basketball operations on Tuesday.
After more than a decade as the Houston Rockets' general manager, Morey joined Philadelphia in November 2020. The Sixers were generally a disappointment under his watch, failing to reach the Eastern Conference Finals in his six seasons there despite having a perennial All-Star and league MVP to build around in Joel Embiid.
Morey brought in other stars in James Harden and Paul George, but never came close to ending the franchise's championship drought, which dates back to 1983. Building around a core of Embiid, George and Tyrese Maxey simply hasn't panned out as hoped.

The timing of Morey's firing is somewhat surprising given that Philadelphia recently upset the Boston Celtics as massive underdogs in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs, overcoming a 3-1 deficit in the process. They were promptly swept by the New York Knicks in the second round, however, ending their season with a whimper.
By dismissing Morey, the Sixers are showing their commitment to head coach Nick Nurse, who has two winning seasons and two playoff appearances in three years with Philadelphia.
It will be interesting to see who the Sixers hire to replace Morey and what other moves they make this offseason as they try to establish themselves as legitimate contenders in the East.
