The Philadelphia 76ers will be going into a new direction after firing Daryl Morey. The former president of basketball operations was able to build a team that went to the second round this season, but was swept by the New York Knicks. In totality, the 76ers haven't had much playoff success under Morey, and it seemed like the time to part ways.
There are several moves that Morey could be criticized for, and the most recent that everyone looks at is trading Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Surprisingly, that deal had the green light from others in the organization, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
“One source with knowledge of the situation insisted Tuesday that the widely criticized trade of McCain to Oklahoma City for a 2026 first-round pick via Houston and three second-round picks was not the proverbial last straw,” Fischer wrote. “Ownership very much approved the McCain deal and sources say that Sixers leadership feels quite confident in its post-Morey scouting ability to ensure that a quality player is selected at No. 22 overall next month.”
McCain is currently on Thunder, thriving for them as they continue their quest for a second straight NBA title, while the 76ers don't have anything to show for it besides a first-round pick for next year that may not be worth much.

There are other moves that Morey should be criticized for, with one of them being the Joel Embiid extension. Though it seemed like the right thing to do at the moment, Embiid was dealing with injuries, and they've gotten even worse now.
He signed Paul George to a large deal last season, and it hasn't seemed to pay off through two years.
The person that they hire as the new president of basketball ops will inherit a solid roster, but there are some decisions that they'll have to make.
