The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has issued a new update on the death of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the 29-year-old’s sudden passing.
According to the Medical Examiner’s official website, Clarke died at a Los Angeles-area residence on Monday, May 11. As of Tuesday, May 12, his body has been declared ready for release.
However, the cause of death remains undetermined.
Brandon Clarke’s Cause of Death Deferred Pending Toxicology
The Medical Examiner listed Clarke’s cause of death as “deferred,” a designation used when additional testing — including toxicology analysis — is required before an official ruling can be made.
The process can take several weeks, and the ruling underscores that key questions surrounding Clarke’s death remain unresolved.
Authorities have not announced a cause or manner of death and have cautioned that the investigation is ongoing.
Brandon Clarke Death Investigation Includes Possible Overdose Angle
Clarke died Monday evening after emergency responders were called to his residence shortly after 5 p.m. local time. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to NBC4 Investigates, law enforcement officials are examining the possibility of an overdose after drug paraphernalia was reportedly discovered inside the home.
Officials have not confirmed those findings publicly, and no determination has been made regarding foul play.
Brandon Clarke Appeared ‘Happy’ Days Before Death
Adding to the uncertainty, new details have emerged about Clarke’s final days.
According to TMZ Sports, Clarke appeared “happy and healthy” during a haircut appointment in Los Angeles on Friday, just three days before his death. The barber told TMZ that Clarke seemed “perfectly content,” noting they watched NBA playoff action together, including a San Antonio Spurs–Minnesota Timberwolves game.
The account has deepened the sense of shock across the league as investigators work to establish a timeline.
Brandon Clarke Facing Charges Before Death
Clarke’s death also comes less than six weeks after his arrest in Arkansas on multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance, fleeing and trafficking.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Memphis Commercial Appeal, Clarke allegedly led deputies on a high-speed chase exceeding 100 mph before authorities discovered more than 230 grams of kratom in his possession.
Kratom is classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance in Arkansas, though its legality varies by state.
Authorities have not publicly linked the arrest to Clarke’s death.
NBA Community Continues to Mourn Brandon Clarke
As the investigation continues, tributes have poured in from across the NBA, including from longtime teammate Ja Morant.
“This hurt … love you broski,” Morant wrote, calling the loss “bigger than basketball.”
The Grizzlies described Clarke as “an outstanding teammate and an even better person,” while NBA commissioner Adam Silver called him “a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit.”

Clarke spent seven seasons with Memphis after being selected No. 21 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga, earning All-Rookie honors and becoming a key part of the franchise’s core.
Though injuries — including a torn Achilles — limited his recent availability, Clarke remained a respected presence within the organization.
For now, the Medical Examiner’s update provides clarity on the process, but not answers, leaving the NBA community awaiting the results that will ultimately determine how Clarke died.
