The Philadelphia 76ers officially moved on from longtime executive Daryl Morey this week, and the decision quickly drew a strong reaction from sports media personality Chris Russo.
Speaking Wednesday on ESPN’s First Take, Russo sharply criticized Morey’s tenure and overall reputation as an NBA executive following the franchise’s latest postseason disappointment.
“Daryl Morey is the most overrated general manager, basketball aficionado, in the history of the National Basketball Association. He doesn’t know – excuse my French, his a** from an elbow.”
Russo continued by targeting Morey’s roster decisions during his time with Philadelphia, specifically referencing the organization’s past commitment to James Harden.
“He gave a frickin’ fortune to Harden, which is a disaster. He was disastrous… Daryl Morey, give me a frickin’ break.”

76ers begin front office overhaul after disappointing tenure under Daryl Morey
The comments came shortly after the 76ers dismissed Morey as the organization begins a major restructuring of its basketball operations department. Former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers is currently overseeing the department in the interim and will lead the search for Philadelphia’s next top basketball executive.
Morey originally joined the 76ers in 2020 after a lengthy run with the Houston Rockets, where he became known for his analytics-driven approach to roster construction. During his tenure in Philadelphia, the franchise remained a consistent playoff team built around former MVP Joel Embiid.
However, the organization repeatedly fell short of advancing deep into the postseason. Philadelphia’s latest campaign ended in a second-round sweep against the New York Knicks, intensifying pressure on ownership to make significant changes.
The 76ers now enter a critical offseason centered around reshaping the roster and front office structure while attempting to maximize the championship window surrounding Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
