Miami Heat Get an Update on the Terry Rozier Saga

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - DECEMBER 08: Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier (C) arrives for an arraignment hearing at U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York on December 08, 2025 in New York City. Rozier is accused of participating in a betting scheme that used insider NBA information. Rozier was one of 34 people, including Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, former Kentucky football player De’Niro Laster, and former player Damon Jones, who were charged in separate cases of alleged defrauding poker players in games linked to New York mafia families, as well as fraudulent betting on NBA games. The Miami Heat have been stuck in limbo all season long. Terry Rozier did not play at all this season after he was arrested in October. Once he was arrested, the NBA suspended him and did not allow him to play in any games.

Miami released him last month after failing to trade him. Part of the reason he wasn’t moved is that the NBA didn’t give them any guidance on whether or not they could. They are still fighting with the NBAPA to determine if they have to pay any of his salary.

The Heat recently got an update on where that stands.

Heat Have Second Arbitration Meeting Regarding Terry Rozier

According to Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, the Heat had a second meeting with an arbitrator to have a resolution to his issue. They have not gotten a ruling yet, but the league had a very specific argument they were trying to make to keep Rozier from earning his full salary.

“The league, sources said, argued that because Rozier could not play in games because of the terms of his bond conditions and should have his salary reduced,” Vorkunov wrote. It seems that there is no indication of when this ruling will actually come down.

Rozier has not played in the NBA since last season. Last year, Rozier had career-low stats in pretty much every statistical category. That is when allegations started that Rozier had allegedly been manipulating his performance. There has been no official ruling from the NBA, either.

The NBA is still investigating Rozier. If he is found to have violated the gambling rules, he will serve a lifetime ban. Jontay Porter is serving that ban after he was found to have manipulated his performance for betting purposes, so there is a precedent for that punishment.

Miami Needs to Make Improvements to the Roster

Rozier would have helped the Heat if he had been able to play this season as he did when he was in Charlotte. Miami needs to add another guard who can take some pressure off Tyler Herro. After not making the playoffs this season, Miami needs to make improvements to the roster.

Pat Riley made it very clear that Miami will not be trading Bam Adebayo. Herro might actually be on the trade block, especially as the Heat pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo. He is the biggest player available this summer. Bringing him in would help their chances of making the playoffs.

As for Rozier, his NBA career is almost certainly over. Even if he is found not to have violated the gambling rules, another team is highly unlikely to bring him in and have him take up a roster spot. It would be shocking to see him play in the NBA again after all of this is taken care of.
