Houston Comets get WNBA Board of Governors’ approval, will begin play in 2027

The Houston Rockets are going to have to make some room inside Toyota Center for the Houston Comets, who will be returning to the Lone Star State for the 2027 WNBA season.

The Comets will be returning to the league after Tillman Fertitta agreed to a deal to purchase the Connecticut Sun, who were previously owned by the Mohegan Tribe. After several hoops the Fertitta ownership group has had to go through, they have now crossed the finish line. A relocation to Houston after the season is imminent, bringing women’s basketball back to the city for the first time since 2008.

The Comets were one of the WNBA’s original eight franchises that started play back in 1997. Their team, led by Tina Thompson, Sheryl Swoopes, and Cynthia Cooper, won the first four league championships from 1997 to 2000.

However, financial troubles plagued the franchise following their dynastic run, and by 2008 the franchise had folded.

With interest in the WNBA skyrocketing, Fertitta wanted to get a piece of the action, and his efforts have led to his purchase of the Sun franchise.

Now Houston basketball fans get another taste of professional basketball in the city, and that should prompt excitement from thousands of Houstonians.

Rockets fans wanting more basketball can start paying attention to the Sun’s final season in Connecticut to get a taste of what they will get with the Comets in 2027.
