NBA Draft Combine is a prime chance for Illinois basketball guard to showcase himself

Kylan Boswell's NBA Draft position has been rather fluid across various mock drafts, with the former Illinois basketball guard projected to go late in the second round or undrafted.

The All-Big Ten honorable mention has had a solid collegiate career between two programs, as he was looked upon as a reliable veteran presence when paired with the likes of freshman Keaton Wagler in the Illini backcourt.

Boswell has shown that he possesses many quality traits as a big-bodied guard, which led to him being named to the Big Ten All-Defensive team in his senior season. The Champaign native has what it takes to be a key member of an NBA team, and he is showing the league that is the case at this year's NBA Draft Combine.

Through two seasons with the Illini, Boswell showed that he was a pivotal component on Brad Underwood's roster, averaging 12.3 points per game in both his junior and senior seasons. He excelled on both ends of the court, showing his ability to be a lockdown perimeter defender, as well as the team's floor general before the arrival of Wagler.

Boswell was especially dominant offensively towards the end of the 2024-25 season, averaging 17 points per game in his final eight games of the year. That production, however, did take a hit the following year when he only averaged 8.0 points per game over the same stretch.

Kylan Boswell will need to continue to prove himself offensively if he wants to keep his NBA Draft stock high

If we can be fair about Boswell, one of the main reasons for his dip in productivity could be attributed to the emergence of Wagler with the Illini. When you have a dynamic scorer, like Wagler, join the team, the production of others will usually dip in some capacity.

But putting that aside, Boswell has still shown flashes of brilliance when the ball is in his hand, especially during this year's Portsmouth Invitational, where he was awarded All-Tournament First Team honors.

Boswell put on a show during this year's tournament reminiscent of his junior season, which included a 20-point performance on 6-of-10 shooting in the first game he played in. It was definitely a breath of fresh air for the Champaign product in his quest to boost his draft stock.

Even with his great showing at Portsmouth, Boswell still needs to make the most of his time at the NBA Draft Combine this weekend. This young man has plenty of potential to be drafted in the NBA, but he needs to show that with all of the eyes on him.

As a biased reporter, I would say that he is selected in the middle of the second round, possibly by the Chicago Bulls, as reported in ESPN's latest mock draft. But in the end, we will all see where he goes come June 23.
