Heat's worst-kept secret is finally out as front office can't deny the obvious

The Miami Heat is tired of the mediocrity. The front office did its best to hide it in-season, and for the past couple of years, but now that NBA insider Jake Fischer has put voice to it, there's no denying it now.

“The Heat are not going to be happy just standing pat and be in this play-in tournament picture again and again and again. The Heat know they are mediocre. They do not want to be mediocre. They want to try and compete for championships.”

This, by no means, is going to come as a huge surprise to the fan base. This, in their eyes, has been the one thing that they've been begging the front office to admit. Even though they didn't put their signature on it, this leak from Fischer pretty much echoes what the fans have been internally struggling with.

And that's good news for a fan base that, at the very least, has been seeking some honesty and clarity heading into the future. The status quo hasn't been good enough for fans, and they wanted the front office to admit it.

But that's just step one.

The Heat admitting mediocrity is the first step

It's one thing to say that the status quo isn't good enough and that the team is tired of living in mediocrity, but it's an entirely different thing for the Heat to make the necessary moves to break out of it.

Assuming the intent is there, and this recent whisper seems to indicate as much, this is good news for fans. It should be noted, though, that intent without action is meaningless.

The Heat can be unsatisfied with their situation all they want, but if they're not willing to make the moves that are necessary to help the team break out of mediocrity, what's the point of the sentiment?

That's where fans currently find themselves.

Can the Heat actually break out of mediocrity?

Everyone knows the Heat are stuck in mediocrity; it's great that the front office is finally admitting it. But what's next? How will that impact how the Heat operates this summer? Will they actually be as aggressive as they've said they will?

Will the right opportunity emerge this offseason? Miami has been relatively patient over the last few years. Will that suddenly change this offseason? It better. Fans are hoping. And it's probably this team's only ticket out of the mud.

The Heat have put themselves in a box where the only way they can bust out of mediocrity (right now) is via a star trade. They're seemingly going all-in on that pursuit. But, especially after the Heat have learned over the years, nothing is guaranteed. No matter how "badly" the team may want it.

The tough part is that everyone now knows the Heat are desperate. And that can't possibly help them in trade discussions.

Miami's embarrassing worst-kept secret is finally out. But it's not nearly the revelation that the front office may believe it to be.
