Danny Murphy has insisted Anthony Gordon is “not on Luis Diaz’s level” despite the Newcastle winger seemingly edging toward a move to Bayern Munich.

Gordon looks to be heading for an exit from Newcastle this summer, but despite being linked with Liverpool for the last couple of years after coming close to a move to Anfield in 2024, Bayern appears to be his most likely destination.

Links with the German champions have gathered momentum this week, although there is still a discrepancy between Bayern and Newcastle over the winger’s value, which could yet open the door for Liverpool to hijack the transfer.

Bayern is reported not to want to spend over the odds, given there is still a debate on how many games Gordon would start, with former Liverpool star Diaz and Michael Olise having impressed so much this season.

“His consistency is a problem. He's had that wonderful run in Europe this season, but a lot of penalties. This is his highest-scoring season.

He's going to a club that is more likely to win things.

“They're going to play 60 games, so he'll get games. But he's not on the same level as Luis Diaz. And he's what, four years younger? Three years younger? So unless Munich have got some sort of plans (and) Diaz is off somewhere...

“But from a footballing perspective, as a player, I'm trying to look at it from his point of view other than the financial gain, you're going to be sitting on the bench.”

Gordon is reported to be Bayern’s main target this summer, although the Bundesliga club is still a long way off Newcastle’s valuation.

BILD’s Bayern Munich reporter Heiko Niederrer has told Chronicle Live that the Magpies want around $94 million (€80M), but Bayern only values him at $70 million (€60M). Liverpool and Arsenal are also said to hold interest in the England international, leaving Newcastle with a tricky dilemma.
