Mateus Fernandes could be set to leave West Ham in the summer

Arsenal are planning a stunning £80m swoop for a Manchester United transfer target who has already "won them the league".

Mikel Arteta is said to be looking to bolster his midfield with West Ham standout Mateus Fernandes. Fernandes, 21, has impressed for the Hammers this season - even as Nuno Espirito Santo's side battle against the drop.

Fernandes is also being tracked by Manchester United and PSG, while Atletico Madrid had chased him last summer - before he left Southampton for West Ham as part of a deal that could eventually be worth £42million. And he could be up for grabs again if the Hammers are relegated.

He still has four years left on his contract with West Ham - and the club are determined to keep hold of him. And with the Hammers facing the drop, Arsenal have one hand on the Premier League trophy.

Arteta's side took a huge step towards Premier League glory on Sunday - beating the Hammers 1-0. However, it could have been very different if Fernandes had converted a gilt-edged chance in the final minutes.

"This guy won us the league. He is a Gunner," one fan joked after seeing the news on social media.

"He missed on purpose, what an audition," a second replied. As a third said: "Reward him for that awful miss lol!"

"After review, West Ham number 18 joins Arsenal on a long term deal," a fourth shared. And another added: "West Ham we've come to collect your best player again!"

While a fifth responded: "This guy gained more publicity after missing that goal scoring opportunity against Gunners. This is looking like a blessing in disguise for him..."

Arsenal are currently two points ahead of Manchester City with two games left in the Premier League season. Arteta's side have to navigate clashes with Burnley and Crystal Palace.
