Arne Slot has insisted he expects to remain at Liverpool next season, saying:
“I have every reason to believe I will be the Liverpool manager next season.”
But for a huge section of the Liverpool fanbase, those words will not bring reassurance.
They will bring dread.
That might sound harsh, but it reflects just how badly this season has damaged confidence in the current direction of the club.
Liverpool went into this campaign as reigning Premier League champions, yet what followed has been one of the most disappointing seasons supporters can remember.
The performances have often been poor, the football passive and the mentality of the team has looked miles away from what fans became used to under previous management.
That’s why many supporters now believe a change of manager is needed this summer.
Not because they enjoy calling for managers to be sacked, but because they genuinely no longer see signs of progress under Slot.
In fact, many fans feel Liverpool have gone backwards in almost every area.
What has frustrated supporters most is the lack of improvement as the season has gone on.
Even during difficult periods under previous managers, fans could usually see an identity or a plan building.
This season, too many matches have simply looked flat, predictable and lifeless.
The concern now is that Liverpool’s hierarchy appear determined to stick with Slot despite the growing frustration around the club.
That disconnect between the board and supporters is becoming more obvious by the week.
Of course, there will still be fans willing to give Slot more time, especially after the injuries and instability Liverpool have dealt with this season.
But it’s impossible to ignore the mood among large parts of the fanbase right now.
And when your manager saying he expects to stay fills supporters with anxiety rather than excitement, that tells its own story about where things currently stand at Liverpool.
