Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is set to address growing uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s future, with the defender yet to sign a new contract.

The France international is entering the final weeks of his current deal and had been expected to extend his stay on Merseyside after indicating last month that he was close to agreeing fresh terms.

“There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement,” said Konate after the Merseyside derby win over Everton.

“I think everyone wished for that for as soon as possible but we are in a good way.” He added: “For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted.

“I’m waiting to sort the contract but when everything is sorted you will have to ask Richard what I said to him in September, November before everyone talked about everything and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet. When he’s going to reply, you will see. I just wish that.”

However, nearly four weeks on – and with just two games of the 2026–27 campaign remaining – a new deal for the 26-year-old has yet to be announced.

Arne Slot was asked aboutKonate’s situation ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa, but offered little detail, promising a full update on the defender’s future.

“If there is a resolution, then we will tell the world,” said the Dutchman. “But at this moment of time it’s not yet, so at the moment it is, we will share this information. But indeed, as you say, you knew what the answer was going to be.”

Ibrahima Konate has endured a challenging campaign on a personal level, following the death of his father in France in January. Despite this, the centre-back offered to cut short his compassionate leave due to Liverpool’s defensive injury issues.

Since joining the club, Konate has made 116 Premier League appearances, helping the Reds win the league title last season, as well as the FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022.

This term, he has made 49 appearances and scored two goals in all competitions as Liverpool push for Champions League qualification.
