Unai Emery‘sympathy’ admission speaks volumes as Liverpool face Harvey Elliott transfer decision

Unai Emery has expressed his sincere sympathy for Harvey Elliott following a frustrating loan stint at Aston Villa, admitting things didn’t go as planned for the Liverpool playmaker.

A player who has become a star amongst the fanbase is Harvey Elliott. His ability on the ball was always there to see, even from the age of 16 when he moved to Merseyside from Fulham. Though it was also the spirit and fight he brought to the pitch, which many adored.

The 23-year-old made the temporary switch to the Midlands in search of regular minutes to cure the “lethargy” noted by pundits like Danny Murphy, but found opportunities hard to come by under the Spaniard.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow night’s clash he said:

“My apologies for Harvey Elliott, is every day in my mind. But it is (about) responsibility. We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility.”

With just two games remaining in the Premier League campaign, Elliott is set to return to Anfield this summer. His future remains a key talking point for Arne Slot, as the Reds’ recruitment team weigh up whether the midfielder will form part of the inevitable off-season rebuild or if another move beckons for the former Fulham starlet.

When he was loaned out to Aston Villa last summer, Kopites expected this to be a deal that would work out for both clubs and the player, who would return to Anfield the following summer. This has been far from the case.

He has played just four times under Unai Emery in the Premier League this season, with his most recent league cameo coming in a 1-0 defeat against Brentford back on the 1st of February. In fact, the last time he was even included in the matchday squad was their 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in the middle of March.

There was a suggestion that he could make a return to Liverpool in January after failing to pick up as many minutes as previously expected, though they couldn’t agree on a fee to bring him back. Ahead of Friday’s match, where the teams meet, Emery spoke about the issues and apologised to the 23-year-old.

Emery said, “To now explain about the reason for this decision is very difficult, or it is easy, but it is not the moment.

“Of course, it is something embarrassing for everyone involved.

One of the major causes for the lack of minutes is believed to be the £30 million clause that the Villains will pay the Reds if the U21 England star features in a certain number of games in the league.

It seems the player has been caught in the crossfire between the two clubs, as they both look to secure Champions League football. However, it reflects badly on both sides for not allowing a special talent to play football as often as he should due to a deal neither side can agree upon.

Liverpool future for Elliott is yet to be decided

Addressing the midfielder’s situation ahead of the match, the Reds’ head coach was pressed on where the 23-year-old fits into his long-term Anfield blueprints. Slot remained coy on a permanent role but confirmed that Elliott will be part of the setup for the start of the upcoming campaign, pointing to his current contract as the club prepares for a pivotal pre-season.

The Reds travel to America this summer as part of their pre-season tour, and with the World Cup taking place in North America, it could allow someone like the Englishman a greater opportunity to prove himself in those weeks.

However, from behind the curtain, it seems that his time on Merseyside is done, and that will be set in stone this summer. He only played 360 minutes under Slot during his first season, and he only played a full 90 once. That was after they wrapped the league title up in an away trip to Brighton, where they lost 3-2.

It’s become more and more clear as time went on that the Dutchman has faith in players, and when he does, he utilises them often, as we are seeing currently with Rio Ngumoha. Elliott, like a handful of others, doesn’t seem to have gained that trust from his head coach; it may be better to look elsewhere.

Last summer, a few Bundesliga sides did demonstrate their interest, though no move prevailed. RB Leipzig were hot on his tail, and if Liverpool decides Yan Diomande is the man they want, he could help leverage the move for the Ivorian.

Once a gem in the crown of the Reds academy, he has unfortunately not been able to fit what the current system needs, and with the confusing deal they agreed with Villa, it has hampered his development during a period where playing football will be. Kopites will remember him for giving it his all, but it looks like he’s already played his last competitive game for the club.

For now, Emery’s “sorry” serves as a reminder of the fine margins in top-flight football, as Liverpool prepare to put their money where their mouth is to fix their central concerns.
