France’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup has been named by Didier Deschamps.France, two-time World Cup winners, came agonisingly close to a third title in 2022, losing the final to Argentina on penalties in Qatar.
Deschamps’ side will now target success in North America, where they have been drawn in Group I alongside Senegal, Iraq and Norway. They will begin their campaign against Senegal on June 16, before facing Iraq on June 22 and Norway on June 26.
France remain among the favourites for the tournament, with several world-class defenders included in the final squad. Dayot Upamecano has been in excellent form for Bayern Munich, while William Saliba continues to impress for Arsenal.
Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate has also been named in the squad despite facing criticism for some of his performances for the Reds this season. Konate has made 27 appearances for France so far.
Ibrahima Konateis yet to sign a new contract with the club, with the defender now in the final weeks of his current deal. Discussions over a possible extension have been ongoing for more than a year, although no agreement has been officially confirmed.
After the win over Everton, Konate said he was “close” to signing a new Liverpool deal and reiterated his desire to stay at Anfield.
The 26-year-old was expected to commit to a long-term extension that would keep him on Merseyside through the peak years of his career. However, despite his comments, there has been no official update in recent weeks, leaving the situation unresolved.
