Mikel Arteta has revealed that Arsenal should have already won far more silverware than they have under his guidance.
Arsenal could win the double this season as they have a two-point lead over Manchester City with two games left in the Premier League title race and find themselves in a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
However, the Spaniard has drawn widespread criticism from fans and pundits alike because he has only managed to lift the FA Cup during his time at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal’s latest 1-0 win against West Ham as well as their convincing victory against Atletico Madrid in recent weeks suggest they have the mentality to get over the line this term.
Mikel Arteta says Arsenal have to win trophies now
In an interview with Sky Sports, Mikel Arteta was quizzed whether his Arsenal side could build a legacy in the same vein as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.
Arteta admitted that Arsenal should have already won far more trophies considering the ascent of his side since the 2022/2023 campaign when they first challenged for the title, saying: “When you say trajectory and what we’ve built and especially in the last four years in terms of consistency, the amount of points, wins, you should have a few trophies, big trophies already, only happens in this league.
Mikel Arteta added: “But that drives you to be even better. We still have to make that step of finalising the business and that’s an opportunity we have in the next three days and then we’ll talk about the rest.”
Burnley manager suggests warning to Arsenal’s Premier League dream
Arsenal fans will respect Mikel Arteta’s admission as he has acknowleged that the club should have etched their names into the history books for lifting silverware under his reign.
With pundits like David James claiming Aston Villa are bigger than Arsenal because they have won the European Cup, Arteta must silence such opinions by lifting silverware.
Michael Jackson assured Burnley will compete against Arsenal instead of downing tools because of the gulf in class between both sides. Jackson’s sentiment could potentially hurt Mikel Arteta’s side if the Clarets take points from them.
“I hope they don’t think we’re going to down tools. I hope there were signs in the [Aston] Villa performance that showed that… we’ve got to instill in the players that belief that they’re going to compete in [the game against Arsenal]… just strip it all back. Go and play. Go and compete. Go and do what you’re good at. Don’t try to make anything else of it than what it is.”
