Arteta joins Arsenal trio on Premier League awards shortlist

David Raya, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice have all been named on the eight-man shortlist for the Premier League Player of the Season award.

Between them, the trio have made 101 league appearances and played a central role in Arsenal’s title challenge.

Raya has already secured the Golden Glove with 18 clean sheets to his name, an achievement built not only on his own consistency, but also the defensive platform provided by players like Gabriel and Rice in front of him.

The Brazilian and England international have become two of Mikel Arteta’s most trusted leaders, both regularly captaining the side during periods when Martin Odegaard has been unavailable.

The remaining nominees are Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Erling Haaland (Manchester City), Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth) and Igor Thiago (Brentford).

The moany, rat-like Fernandes was recently named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, a decision that sparked debate despite the Portuguese midfielder’s impressive creative numbers for an average Manchester United side. It was suggested that support for Arsenal players was split between Rice, Gabriel and Raya, potentially costing the midfielder, who finished second in the voting.

Unsurprisingly, Mikel Arteta has also been shortlisted for Manager of the Season. He is up against Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), Keith Andrews (Brentford), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth) and Regis Le Bris (Sunderland).

There are no Arsenal players on the shortlist for Young Player of the Season, although two nominees, West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi, have both been linked with potential moves to the Emirates this summer.

The rest of the shortlist features Lewis Hall (Newcastle), Michael Kayode (Brentford), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Alex Scott (Bournemouth), Rayan Cherki and Nico O’Reilly (Manchester City).
