Wataru Endo has provided a positive update on his foot injury after being named in Japan’s World Cup squad. The midfielder has not played since February 11 due to the issue, which he revealed in April had left a ligament “completely gone.”
However, his recovery has progressed well. Endo is expected to be at Anfield for Liverpool’s final game of the season, either as part of the squad or watching from the stands.
It could also mark his final appearance as a Liverpool player after three years at the club. “I’m glad to be in the Japan squad for the World Cup,” said Endo. “It’s an honour to lead this Japan team as the captain.
“It wasn’t an easy way to recover from the injury but I believed in myself to make this happen and will keep working hard to get fit for the games.
“Thank you all my teammates, staff and the fans for always being with and supporting me. I hope to see all the Liverpool FC fans on the pitch at Anfield next week before going to the World Cup. YNWA.”
Endo is set to captain Japan at the World Cup, which will be held across the USA, Mexico and Canada. Drawn in Group F, Japan will face the Netherlands on June 14, Tunisia on June 21 and Sweden on June 26.
Initially, Endo was expected to miss the remainder of the club season to focus on regaining fitness in time for the tournament.
However, last month, Arne Slot suggested the 33-year-old could still feature for Liverpool before the end of the campaign, offering a surprising boost as he nears full recovery.
Slot said on April 24: “Wata is starting to go outside. Not with the team yet, but starting to do exercises outside on the pitch with the rehab team so he is making steps, but he will not be available next week for [Manchester] United or the week after. But we are hoping and expecting him to be back in the end of the season.”
Endo, who has made 12 appearances and provided one assist for Liverpool this season, has one year remaining on his contract but has struggled for regular minutes under Arne Slot and could be considered surplus to requirements.
A strong World Cup showing would boost his value, with Liverpool likely hoping to secure an improved fee should he depart this summer.
