Alexander Isak was once again missing from the Liverpool squad due to a persisting groin problem.
Liverpool supporters were furious after Alexander Isak missed their 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
Whispers circulated before kick-off that the Swede had picked up a groin injury. This was confirmed when the teams were announced, with Isak failing to make the matchday squad.
Just like he did before they played Manchester united a fortnight ago, Arne Slot was conscious to play down the severity of Isak’s latest setback. He told reporters: "There is definitely a chance (he could play again this season).
“He missed pre-season as we all know and then he broke his leg. We have tried to be as careful as we could with him, taking into account that our other No.9, Hugo Ekitike, is out for such a long time.
"So we needed Isak as a result of that even more so we have tried to be as careful as we could. I don’t think it could come to anyone as a surprise that if you miss your pre-season and then break your leg that minor injuries can occur if you then start into Premier League games in that intensity.
"Just a bit of bad luck for him that in a moment of time he comes back, then Hugo (Ekitike) gets injured and we need him more. I expect him to train with us this week but, yeah, I cannot give any guarantees."
Alexander Isak injury woes
Isak suffered five muscle injuries during his three-year spell at St James’ Park. Newcastle United fans tried to warn Liverpool when the transfer saga reached a deadlock last summer.
Since joining the Reds, Isak struggled for fitness until suffering a broken leg in December. He has scored just four goals across all competitions this season - compared to 27 last year.
Liverpool supporters turn on Alexander Isak?
Social media was rife with criticism from Liverpool fans once news broke of Isak’s absence. One supporter wrote: “Can we be honest, Isak has been a terrible signing. £125million for a striker on course to finish the season with just four goals in all competitions.
“We gambled on an injury-prone player and it failed spectacularly. At that price, he needed to hit the ground running. If (Manchester) United had signed him, we’d be laughing at them now for it.

“'Wait for a full pre-season' is wishful thinking when he’s likely to come back injured from the World Cup anyway. Realistically, you can’t defend this as anything above a 1/10 signing right now.”
Another angry fan vented that Isak is “made out of bread sticks”. He wrote: “Made out of breadsticks. £125million looking more and more silly by the week.”
Could Liverpool cut their losses and sell him at a discount? One fan posted: “Worst signing in our history. Sell him for half the amount and forget about him.”
