Andy Robertson offered a damning assessment of his Liverpool teammates after watching the dismal Aston Villa defeat from the substitutes' bench.

Robertson will leave Liverpool at the end of the season but played no part in what would have been his last away game for the club. He will hope to be involved against Brentford on the final day, with the pressure now on Liverpool to secure Champions League football.

That could have been achieved at Villa Park on Friday but Liverpool turned in yet another woeful display on the road to lose 4-2, with Ollie Watkins running riot for the home side.

Despite Liverpool's defence being pulled apart, Robertson was kept on the bench and pulled no punches as he took to social media after the game, with a message to the club's supporters.

He wrote: "A performance which sums up our season. A long way short of the levels of this club and what you rightly expect of us.

"But I can only thank you for the last nine years of travelling up and down the country and all over the world packing out away ends wherever we go! Will see you next week for one last time."

Robertson's comments echo those made by Joe Gomez after the defeat, as Liverpool fans made their feelings clear by leaving well before the final whistle.

The defeat only adds to the pressure on Arne Slot, who suggested before the game that he is certain that he will be in charge at the start of next season.

But speaking at the final whistle, the Dutchman did not offer the same assurances. "It's not about me, it's about us being disappointed with the result,” Slot told the BBC’s Match of the Day.

“I spoke yesterday on it and that's enough. Our focus is on the Brentford game and making sure we earn the support of the fans by starting the game aggressive and well.

“The culmination of the fan support and a good performance will lead us to what we want to achieve and that is qualifying for the Champions League."

The loss leaves Liverpool in fifth in the table, which would be enough to secure a return to the Champions League next season. Victory over Brentford on the final day will cement that place but there is no room for error.

Bournemouth can close the gap to just a point going into the final matches, should it beat Manchester City in midweek, and faces Nottingham Forest on the final day. Brighton could also still finish above the Reds if it wins both its matches, and Liverpool loses to Brentford.
