Arne Slot was again without several key players against Aston Villa as his team suffered a heavy 4-2 loss, leaving Liverpool still without a guaranteed Champions League spot next season.
Liverpool's £125m striker Alexander Isak was nowhere to be seen in the matchday squad as he continues to struggle with injuries. He played 23 minutes against Chelsea last weekend after being substituted on for Rio Ngumoha - a decision that didn't go down well at Anfield at the time.
"Indeed, Alex is out - minor injury," Slot said on Friday. "I think it’s something we all understand. If you miss pre-season, then suffer a broken leg, when you are coming back, we’ve been really careful with him."

Ngumoha had been taken off against Chelsea after feeling some cramp during the game. The 17-year-old returned against Aston Villa, where he played the full 90 minutes.
Isak could return in time for Liverpool's final game against Brentford, as could goalkeeper Alisson, who is back in training after not playing since mid-March in the club's 4-0 thrashing of Galatasaray.

Slot said ahead of the Villa game: "Alisson trained with us again, let's see tomorrow whether he is ready or has to wait one more week."
Mohamed Salah returned to action for the first time since coming off injured against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago. This means he should be available to play in his final game for the club at Anfield next Sunday.
Florian Wirtz also made his return at Villa Park. The German No.7 hadn't played since Liverpool's 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, Jeremie Frimpong was unable to feature on Friday night due to a suspected muscular injury.
Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo all remain out long term, as does Conor Bradley, who Slot provided an update on earlier this month.
He explained: "In rehab, it's always important whether certain steps go well or don't go well. It's really difficult, at the stage he is in now, to predict when he will be back.
"He's still inside and working really hard to make the right steps, but he is quite far away from going outside... that makes it quite complicated to tell how long it is going to take."

Youngsters Jayden Danns and Stefan Bajcetic are both sidelined for an extended period of time. Danns is back with the U21s, but Slot made it clear that it would be a while before the 20-year-old makes another Premier League appearance.
For Slot, he will be pleased to have Salah and Wirtz back in time for next weekend. The club's final game against Brentford could be a must-win for Liverpool if Bournemouth and/or Brighton win on Sunday.
The Dutch head coach will be even happier if Alisson can return by then. Giorgi Mamardashvili struggled against Aston Villa, so the Brazilian could bring further security to Liverpool's defence.
