“Arne Slot wanted him”–Journalist keeps Liverpool transfer idea alive

Lutsharel Geertruida is likely to remain an option for Liverpool this summer as “Arne Slot wanted him” at Anfield previously.

Journalist Valentijn Driessen comments on the Sunderland loanee today, relayed by Voetbal Zone. He can see the defender heading to Anfield this summer.

Sunderland exit on the cards

Lutsharel Geertruida has spent this season on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. But the deal will not be made permanent this summer. A report last week stated that Sunderland have decided to let him return to Germany rather than sign the 25-year-old.

That same report indicated he is unlikely to remain at Leipzig, though. According to the information in that report, enquiries have already been made in Europe’s top five leagues.

Liverpool are one of the sides who have long been credited with an interest. indeed, numerous reports in England stated that they were keen in the January transfer window. That deal never happened as Sunderland refused to sanction an early end to his loan deal at the Stadium of Light.

But the Reds have been interested in a while. Geertruida previously worked with Arne Slot at Feyenoord. And various reports in 2024 made it clear that Liverpool were in the mix for him.

Slot relationship key

Now could be the ideal opportunity revive that interest. And Driessen certainly believes that a deal is possible.

“Arne Slot wanted him. Because Geertruida can play in various positions,” he said on De Telegraaf’s Kick-Off podcast.

“First at Leipzig, and now at Sunderland, he is struggling to keep up. And those aren’t exactly the best clubs in the world to end up at right now. And Liverpool is another step up. Can he handle that?”

“Maybe with a manager like Slot, with whom he has experience at Feyenoord. That it will work. Let’s hope so for the boy, because potentially he is a good footballer.”
