Alexis Mac Allister came under criticism during Liverpool’s defeat to Aston Villa after what many supporters felt was an embarrassing reaction during a clash with Ezri Konsa at a set piece.
During the incident, Mac Allister went to ground dramatically appearing to suggest he had been struck in the face, despite replays showing very little contact from Konsa.
The reaction immediately sparked frustration among viewers, especially given the context of Liverpool’s poor performance on the night.
Even Jamie Carragher sounded unimpressed during commentary.
The former Liverpool defender could be heard effectively telling Mac Allister to get back up, clearly feeling the midfielder had exaggerated the incident far too much.
It was one of those moments that summed up Liverpool’s night perfectly — frustration, loss of composure and players looking for decisions rather than taking responsibility.
Supporters are also beginning to grow frustrated with Mac Allister’s overall body language this season.
There have been too many moments recently where he looks irritated, off the pace and more focused on appealing to referees than influencing matches the way Liverpool know he can.
That’s a big concern because at his best, Mac Allister is one of Liverpool’s most intelligent and composed players.
But right now, he looks nothing like the player fans watched dominate games not so long ago.
Of course, players trying to win fouls is nothing new in modern football.
But when a team is struggling as badly as Liverpool currently are, moments like this tend to attract far more criticism.
Especially when supporters are desperate to see more fight, leadership and intensity from experienced players.
Liverpool’s problems against Villa went far beyond one incident involving Mac Allister.
But it was still a moment that frustrated many fans watching another disappointing performance from a side that continues to look completely short of confidence.
