Mohamed Salah's teammates have reacted to the Liverpool man's post on social media in which he called for a return of "heavy metal" soccer at Anfield following a 12th league defeat of the season.

Arne Slot's side collapsed in the second half at Aston Villa, losing 4-2. It could have been a much heavier defeat for the Reds had Virgil van Dijk not netted a brace, with Liverpool's entire team far too easy to play through for much of the game.

It is a familiar issue this season for the Reds, with their midfield department lacking intensity. Defensively, Liverpool has conceded more goals than ever before in a 38-game season, with another match still to play next weekend against Brentford.

On Instagram, Salah's post was liked by teammates including Dominik Szoboszlai, Andy Robertson and Milos Kerkez. Midfielder Curtis Jones commented with a clapping emoji, while Hugo Ekitike posted a handshake emoji.

"I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions," Salah wrote on social media.

"It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that.

"Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies.

"That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.

"Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games.

"Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.

"As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen."

Liverpool.com says: Salah is right to say that standards are not where they should be at Anfield at the moment. The big question is whether a big summer of transfers can change that.

Arne Slot believes that things will get better with a few new signings, suggesting that fans are underestimating the value of a good summer in the market. The mood, though, is not good at the moment.
