Liverpool midfielder James McConnell made a quiet return to the first-team squad at Aston Villa, marking a matchday return after more than a year.
This season was earmarked as one of progression for McConnell, with the 21-year-old signing a new contract until 2030 and joining Ajax on loan.
He made just seven appearances for the Dutch side, including only two starts, and consequently had his loan spell end prematurely.
McConnell returned to Liverpool before undergoing minor surgery and only returned to action last month, playing his first game in over five months with the U21s.
The midfielder then stepped up to first-team training and was named in his first senior matchday squad for the club since April 2, 2025, when he was an unused substitute against Everton.

His appearance on the team sheet at Villa Park understandably went under the radar, with Alexander Isak and Jeremie Frimpong notable absentees, in addition to the return of Mo Salah and Florian Wirtz.
But while not the biggest story to come from Friday’s match, McConnell’s presence will be of personal satisfaction after a campaign that has failed to live up to expectations.
The 21-year-old has shown promise across his 13 senior Liverpool outings to date, and will likely be considered for another loan next season, though he did attract permanent interest last year.
McConnell would benefit from a full pre-season and time to integrate into his new surroundings, if a loan is pursued, having only joined Ajax at the end of August last year.
Trey Nyoni has also been mooted with a temporary move, and while that would aid his development after just 230 minutes of action this season, it would further deplete options in midfield.
McConnell’s last first-team appearance was in the defeat at Plymouth in the FA Cup in February last year.
