A stunning new report has now added another dramatic layer to the uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah and Liverpool.
According to claims from journalist Simon Hughes, some of Salah’s associates in Egypt were quietly suggesting the Liverpool forward had not completely abandoned hope of remaining at the club.
But there would reportedly be one major condition.
A “regime change” at Liverpool — beginning with Arne Slot leaving his position as head coach.
If true, it is an extraordinary development.
Especially given the growing belief in recent weeks that Salah’s time at Liverpool was already coming to an emotional end.
His recent social media statement strongly criticised the direction of the club and called for Liverpool to rediscover its “heavy metal” identity and winning mentality.
Many supporters viewed the message almost like a farewell.
But these latest claims now suggest the situation may not be completely closed after all.
Of course, there is still a huge difference between private feelings and what realistically happens next.
Liverpool’s hierarchy have publicly continued to back Slot despite one of the club’s worst seasons in modern Premier League history.
And making a managerial change simply to keep one player — even a player as important as Salah — would be an enormous decision.
But what these reports do reveal is just how serious the tension and frustration around the club may have become behind the scenes.
Salah’s comments already appeared to expose growing concerns over standards, identity and leadership at Liverpool.
Now there are suggestions those concerns may run even deeper than supporters initially realised.
