With one game left in their Premier League season, Liverpool and manager Arne Slot have work to do just to secure Champions League qualification

Just 12 months after lifting the Premier League trophy, Liverpool are at risk of missing out on Champions League football altogether. Defeat away to Aston Villa on Friday means the Reds could go into the final day of the season needing a win over Brentford just to finish in the top five.
All of this has brought pressure on manager Arne Slot despite him overseeing that 2024/25 league title. One of the potential contenders to replace him - former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso - has taken over as Chelsea manager.
Despite spending a small fortune last summer, there is a feeling that Liverpool may well need further reinforcements. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are both set to depart, leaving big gaps in terms of experience at the highest level.

Timber open to Premier League move
Dutch midfielder Quinten Timber is ready to make the jump to the Premier League, according to L'Equipe. The 24-year-old played for Arne Slot at Feyenoord and has been linked with Liverpool in the past, though other English clubs could also join the race.
Timber, the twin brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien, only joined Marseille in January. However, the French outfit are expected to entertain offers for multiple squad members after missing out on Champions League qualification.

The club from Provence finished second last season under Roberto De Zerbi but parted ways with the Italian boss in February. His replacement, Habib Beye, has the team in sixth place with one match remaining.
Dressing room starting to turn
Liverpool fans have interpreted social media posts from Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones as signs the Reds' dressing room has begun to turn on Slot. "Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve," Salah wrote as part of a lengthy Instagram post.
Jones' social media statement was briefer, reading: "Thank you for your continued support in a disappointing season. It’s way off the standards expected at this football club."
A number of fans took the side of the players. "Don’t usually agree with questioning the coach in public but this is an exception," wrote one, while others read between the lines of Salah's reference to "heavy metal football" as support for former boss Jurgen Klopp if not a direct dig at Slot.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson also had his say, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: “I mean, the relationship with the manager has been fragmented for a long time since he was left out of the side. And I think he’s just echoing the voices of the Liverpool supporters that have watched their team and they’ve watched their team in a slow demise, really, this season in their style of play."
