Fabio Vieira is wanted by HSV on a permanent transfer from Arsenal

German outfit Hamburg want to sign Fabio Vieira on a permanent transfer from Arsenal but they will not be triggering their £19.15million (€22m) option to buy the Portuguese attacker.

Vieira struck seven goals, including a final-day stunner against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, while on loan in the Bundesliga, also registering five assists.

But problematically for HSV, they do not have the financial power to trigger the transfer clause and are instead planning to re-negotiate a deal with the Gunners.

Those talks will not talk place until after the Champions League final out of respect for Arsenal, and Hamburg will also only instigate discussions once they've received encouragement that Vieira is willing to join.

In the past few weeks, director of football Claus Costa and head coach Merlin Polzin have held private talks with Vieira in a bid to convince him to stay, however, he is expected to attract interest from elsewhere.

Additionally, Hamburg will try to strike a deal with Arsenal for under £8.7m (€10m) because the 25-year-old's contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in 2027.

The Gunners will be expected to push for a higher fee and will also entertain bids from further afield as they seek to recoup as much money as possible.

The chances of Vieira being reintegrated into Mikel Arteta's squad are near zero because the Portugal international is not part of his plans.

HSV's all-time record transfer stands at £12.18m (€14m) when they signed Filip Kostic from Stuttgart in 2016, so it was always unlikely they were going to meet the buy-out clause frantically negotiated with Arsenal on transfer deadline day back in September.

Speaking on Saturday, Vieira refused to commit to re-joining Hamburg on a permanent basis.

He explained: "I have to be open to everything. Let's see what happens."

When asked if he could imagine staying put, he added: "I can't say that yet. No matter what the future brings, I was very happy here and will be forever grateful to the HSV. The club did everything for me, the support was amazing. I feel the love of the fans and the club. They all love me."

Vieira spent last season on loan at FC Porto but did not do enough to convince his former employers to buy him back from Arsenal.
