May 18 – Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach, ending weeks of speculation over who would take charge at Stamford Bridge following another chaotic managerial reset in west London.
Alonso has signed a four-year deal and will officially begin work on July 1.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said following the announcement.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”
The appointment arrives after a turbulent few months for Chelsea, who dismissed Liam Rosenior after just 106 days in charge following the earlier departure of Enzo Maresca.
Despite also considering Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva during the process, Chelsea ultimately made Alonso their priority target after renewed talks accelerated in recent days.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it,” Alonso added.
“Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
Chelsea described the Spaniard’s appointment as part of the “next phase” of the club’s long-term project under its current ownership.
“His appointment reflects the club’s belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity, which were key to the decision to ask him to help lead the next phase of Chelsea’s journey,” the club said in a statement.
“Chelsea Football Club looks forward with confidence to the next phase in collaboration with Xabi, united in the determination to bring success to Stamford Bridge, a hallmark of the club’s history and future.”
Alonso returns to management after a brief and ultimately unsuccessful spell at Real Madrid, where he was dismissed in January, less than a season into the role. The sacking looked harsh at the time and hasn’t exactly paid off for Madrid either – ending another season without the La Liga or Champions League title.
Alonso’s management reputation, however, remains largely built on the extraordinary job he delivered at Bayer Leverkusen, guiding the club to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2024 and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after young coaches.
The appointment will also inevitably reignite debate around the managerial seat at Liverpool.
Many Liverpool supporters had long viewed Alonso – a hugely popular former midfielder at Anfield and part of the club’s 2005 Champions League-winning side – as the natural long-term successor to Arne Slot.
Instead, Chelsea have moved decisively while Liverpool owners FSG continue backing Slot despite growing supporter frustration over performances and direction in recent weeks – with the players (led by Mohamed Salah) now seeming to also turn on the Dutchman.
Whether that proves to be a sliding-doors moment for both clubs may become one of the defining managerial storylines of coming season.
